About the Program

The keelboat experience is for our past Challenge the Wind participants to experience a the thrill of sailing a big boat. The experience takes place onboard our Tartan 10 Macho Duck. Participants will work as a team as they learn how to operate a 33 foot keelboat. They will expand their sailing horizons by learning a new style of sailing, how to safely use equipment on larger boats, and get to experience sailing and navigating in new parts of the river.

Participants will sail with an experienced skipper and experienced crew member.

Topics will include how to:
-Be safe on a large boat
-Use a winch and winch handle
-Understand basic navigation aids
-Communicate with a larger team of sailors
-Use mechanical advantage to manage a large load
-Apply sailing knowledge from dinghies to a different type of sailing experience
-And more!

About the Boat

The name of the boat is Macho Duck, it is a Tartan 10. Tartan 10's are widely popular and raced, with an active fleet in the Detroit area. It's 33 feet long, has an inboard diesel engine, and a cabin area with bunks, storage, and porta-potty. They are known to be fast and easy to sail, and have the option to fly a spinnaker. It is usually sailed with about 6 people. Macho Duck was donated to our program a few years ago, and is actively raced as part of the adult program in the evenings.

Logistics

Macho Duck is NOT docked at Belle Isle. It is across the river at a marina called Grayhaven State Harbor. There is full bathroom access and secured parking inside the gate. Access will be provided as the program start date approaches. Participants must be dropped off and picked up in this location.
