Detroit River Tall Ship Outing
for Past and Present Challenge the Wind Sailors

Challenge the Wind past and present sailors were invited to sail on the 77-foot schooner Inland Seas earlier this summer.

This unique opportunity was made possible by the generosity of the University of Michigan’s Detroit River Story Lab.

Participants experienced the river from the decks of a tall ship while learning about the environmental and cultural heritage of our local communities.

Challenge the Wind sailors were the only participating organization on the schooner during this three-hour outing.

The Tall Ship
The Schooner Inland Seas is a 77-foot, traditionally rigged tall ship schooner of the kind frequently seen on the river and throughout the Great Lakes during the 18th and 19th centuries. She is licensed and inspected by the US Coast Guard.

Tall Ship STEM Curriculum
The STEM curriculum is hands-on, presented by Inland Seas instructors, Detroit River Story Lab research assistants, and community experts. The instructor team will focus on local marine ecology and the rich historical legacies of the river.
