Boat Building Workshops -
This is a collaboration between the University of Michigan’s Detroit River Story Lab and Detroit Community Sailing Center.

The workshop includes after-school sessions and a week during the summer to finish and sail the boat. Our sailor/boat builders will build an Optimist sailboat. This is the same boat used in our Lean to Sail program.

They will learn to safely use hand tools, engineering drawings, epoxies s, fiberglassing, etc. during the workshop as a team to build the boat. They will also learn the historical, cultural and environmental aspects of the river where their newly build boats will sail. The workshop includes professional carpentry instructions appropriate for participant's age with close adult supervision. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend each session and learn along with their the boat builder/sailor.
