Boat Build Workshop
ages 11-14
Boat Building Workshop dates and register will be announced shortly.
What does it cost?
$100 fee includes safety gloves, eye protection, masks and all materials needed to build a boat.
Experience Required
Previous participation in a CTW Learn to Sail Session is required. No woodworking or tool use experience is required.
Boat Building Workshops - Sailing isn't just limited to summertime! We offer this winter after school activity where our sailors will build an Optimist sailboat. This is the same boat used in our Lean to Sail program, except it will be made using marine grade wood.
Participants will learn to safely use hand tools, engineering drawings, epoxies, etc. during the workshop as a team to build the boat. They will also learn the historical, cultural and environmental aspects of the river where their newly build boats will sail. The workshop includes professional carpentry instructions appropriate for participant's age with close adult supervision.
This is an additional pilot for the program so we may make adjustments as the workshop proceeds. We will communicate regularly with parents on any adjustments. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend each session and learn along with their the boat builder/sailor. This is a joint program offered by Detroit Community Sailing Center and U of M Detroit River Story Lab and a sponsorship by the Skillman Foundation.
