2025 Skiff and Schooner Boat Build Workshop
University of Michigan Detroit River Story Lab and Detroit Community Sailing partnership
ages 11-15
Space is limited. Preference will be given to 1st time builders
Registration is closed - The workshop covers after-school sessions to build the boat’s hull and a week this summer to fiberglass, rig and test sail the newly built boat.

Summer Finish and Test Sail Week
Dates: Monday through Friday, June 23 and ending June 27
Times: 9 AM – Noon
Location: Belle Isle Boathouse

What does the fee include?
$100 fee includes both the after school sessions and the summer week, safety gloves, eye protection, masks and all materials needed to build a boat.
Experience Required
Previous participation in a CTW Learn to Sail Session or the Schooner program is required. No woodworking or tool use experience is required.
Boat Building Workshops -
This is a collaboration between the University of Michigan’s Detroit River Story Lab and Detroit Community Sailing Center.
The workshop includes after-school sessions and a week during the summer to finish and sail the boat. Our sailor/boat builders will build an Optimist sailboat. This is the same boat used in our Lean to Sail program.
They will learn to safely use hand tools, engineering drawings, epoxies s, fiberglassing, etc. during the workshop as a team to build the boat. They will also learn the historical, cultural and environmental aspects of the river where their newly build boats will sail. The workshop includes professional carpentry instructions appropriate for participant's age with close adult supervision. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend each session and learn along with their the boat builder/sailor.
