The six week long 'Youth Racing Adventure' program introduces sailors to the exciting world of Regatta’s with local adventures and challenges.
Making informed decisions is one of the most powerful tools a sailor has. The program's focus is on the skills and foundational knowledge to make informed decisions on the water. Fun challenges, camaraderie, and adventure are to be expected! Sailors will depart the dock, practice on the racecourse, and return to shore with real world skills to navigate life’s ocean.
The program introduces trip planning and time management with real world scenarios, that coincidentally transfer to nuanced regatta techniques, like timing a perfect start or reading the racecourse mid way through the race. All the while enjoying the freeing nature of wind powered travel.
Several youth sailing programs on the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair host youth regattas during the summer months. We would like to motivate youth sailors to participate in these regattas by giving them the skills and confidence, along with the boats and coaches, to make it happen.
Sailors can expect these topics and more during the program:
- Regatta principles and rules
- Starting procedures
- Racing tactics
- Operating a spinnaker
- Teamwork and communication
- Understanding nautical charts
- Weather forecasting
- Time management
- Trip planning
- Confidence
- Decision making
